Skyping with India https://barbinnebraska.com/skyping-with-india/ https://barbinnebraska.com/skyping-with-india/#respond Wed, 08 Dec 2010 22:12:44 +0000 http://barbinnebraska.posterous.com/skyping-with-india Tomorrow morning is a big day! My 3rd graders will be Skyping with a family friend, of one of my students, who is currently living in New Delhi, India. We watched a National Geographic Kids video from their website.??

We also watched a video from her own blog which showed the many types of transportation used in India.??

Here are the questions we came up with. I will be printing this out for all the students so they can take notes. Then we will write together a 'blog post' on our wiki.??

********

Do people wear clothes like we see in the US? If not, what kind of clothes do they wear?

We saw your video on your blog trying to cross the busy street. How hard is it to get around since there are so many people in India?

What kind of transportation do you use???

What kind of foods can you eat in India?

Do you miss any foods from the US that you can???t get in India?

Is it hard to communicate? What languages are spoken in India? Do you speak any languages other than English???

Do your boys play with different types of toys now that they are in India?

What kind of jobs are in India?

What is the weather like? How is it different from the region you came from?

What holiday???s are celebrated? Do people celebrate Christmas?

What religions are practiced by the people in India?

The Art of Recording with Third Graders https://barbinnebraska.com/the-art-of-recording-with-third-graders/ https://barbinnebraska.com/the-art-of-recording-with-third-graders/#comments Mon, 23 Aug 2010 23:04:00 +0000 http://barbinnebraska.posterous.com/the-art-of-recording-with-third-graders We had a great first day of school! It’s such an exciting time of year. I love the sights of all their bright shiny faces, their brand new tennis shoes, and the smells of a brand new box of crayons. Today Room 113 also began their recording careers on our wiki.

I chose a relatively simple project to ease all 31 students into the world of global sharing on our wiki. I decided we would record my students praying. We prayed the Hail Mary. This prayer was said especially for a mom in our school family who is very ill. Many of my students have already been praying for this mom so it was very heartfelt.

The heartfelt version was Take 1. I use GarageBand to record my students and use a USB microphone from Logitech. They did a great job but it was very quiet. I showed them the sound waves that the recording made. They noticed the correlation between the quiet sounds and smaller waves.

The second take was much louder and some students speed up the words. That didn’t work. They were quite impressed with the tall jumps the sound waves made on this version.  Take 3 had giggles in it because some students were still speeding up.

Finally, Take 4 was good enough. I really wanted to get this recording up on our wiki today! I do give a hand signal to all the students to begin and on this version I used my hand like a conductor would. That seemed to help.

Take a listen to Room 113 praying the Hail Mary.

Skyping Success! https://barbinnebraska.com/skyping-success/ https://barbinnebraska.com/skyping-success/#respond Thu, 13 May 2010 23:08:01 +0000 http://barbinnebraska.posterous.com/skyping-success When I began my teaching career many years ago, I never imaged that technology tools would come so far. The best technology we had, ??in college, were Apple IIes with floppy discs. Technology has come a long way! Today, we had a video chat with an Air Force Staff Sargeant in Afghanistan.??

To prepare my students, we used Google Earth to 'fly' to Afghanistan. We zoomed in and looked at many of the buildings. We noticed many buildings under construction. We also saw a Mosque. I also found a website that showed a side by side comparison of our city to Kabul. We looked at the city size and the distance it is from us. We would be Skyping over 7,000 miles away.??

The serviceman who kindly agreed to Skype with us was a family friend of one of my students. He was so generous to take time out of his day to Skype with us. We had earlier tried to connect with him twice, but he was called back into work. The time difference between our town and his is 9 hours.??

We had many questions, but we limited them to just a few. We wanted to know about the weather. He told us that it was 80 and dusty. He also said that it will be in the 100s next month.

We wanted to know about his uniform and if he had to carry a gun. He told us his uniform was brown and yes, he carries a gun when he's on duty.??

We asked him about his food and where he lives. He said that he eats the same foods that he ate back at home. But that some days they have foods like the foods of Afghanistan. He said he lives in an air conditioned trailer with several other servicemen.??

We knew that he was a language specialist for the Air Force so we were curious to know how many languages he spoke. He knows 5 and he said that he had 18 months of special training for this current job.??

To close out our call, I thanked him for his time and asked him if he had any final messages for us. He said he was glad to see that we are remembering the servicemen who are serving our country and to remember that servicemen are leaving behind loved ones, and especially children, while they are serving. I told him we were going to send him cards from us and asked if there was something he misses that he can't get in Afghanistan, that would be gummy bears!??

After we hung up, we all paused to pray for his safety. We prayed a Hail Mary.??

Skyping with Afghanistan https://barbinnebraska.com/skyping-with-afghanistan/ https://barbinnebraska.com/skyping-with-afghanistan/#respond Mon, 10 May 2010 23:42:22 +0000 http://barbinnebraska.posterous.com/skyping-with-afghanistan Tomorrow we have an opportunity to Skype with a family friend of one of my students. He has begun a 6 month tour and has agreed to Skype with us!??

We have some good questions ready. We want to know about the weather, what he eats, and what his living quarters are like. I understand that he is a language specialist, so we want to know what languages he speaks.??

If you have Skyped with anyone in the service, is their anything I should be aware of? We have never Skyped that far from home.??

Poetry and Skype: Made For Each Other https://barbinnebraska.com/poetry-and-skype-made-for-each-other/ https://barbinnebraska.com/poetry-and-skype-made-for-each-other/#comments Fri, 07 May 2010 23:12:26 +0000 http://barbinnebraska.posterous.com/poetry-and-skype-made-for-each-other Today we had another successful Skype call with Patti Harju's 2nd graders in Grand Rapids, MI. This was the 3rd time we have Skyped with her students. Today St. Isidore of Seville, the patron Saint of the Internet, must have been smiling down at us because it was a near perfect call. The sound and pictures were just fine. We didn't have a choppy picture or sound. We did lose connection toward the end of the call, but we reconnected quickly.??

I believe I have figured what makes a great Skype session. The most important item is to have a topic. Today's topic was poetry. I believe poetry is best enjoyed read or recited out loud. Last Wednesday, we celebrated Poem In Our Pocket day.??

Each student had to memorize a poem and recite it in front of their classmates. Presentation is listed as one of the 6 Traits Plus 1 which we use at our school. They only had to memorize a 4 line poem but I told them that they are not limited to 4 lines. We had everything from The Purple Cow to Shel Silverstein to Emily Dickinson. I loved how many parents helped their children find a poem and how many shared their favorite poem with their child.??

So, today, we called Mrs. Harju's class. I had 12 volunteers and her class had 5 poems. They read their poems in small groups in a choral reading style. Their poems were all so cute and funny. They commented that our poems were memorized so that gave her students an idea of what to expect in 3rd grade. I was so proud that my students all remembered their poems!??

Our call lasted about 20 minutes and I find that to be the perfect amount of time. I'm looking forward to Skyping next year with my new class of students!??
