OK Go and 3rd grade

Yesterday we had 5 extra minutes before we needed to get ready to go home. So, I turned to YouTube and shared the newest video of OK Go’s song.

They loved it! I told them that my husband, who teaches High School Physics, has his students make a Rube Goldberg machine with 15 steps. I also suggested that they could try this at home and share your results with us. I added the video to our wiki.

What do you know, but one student did it! I love that he was so excited and had the materials at home to do this. He used Jenga blocks, dominoes and a box. He made 4 videos using his mom’s digital camera. His 4 machines started in different places. One on a desk, one on stairs and 2 on the mantel. I loved that he worked with his younger sister and his father. How cool is that to have a student so excited about an idea, work on it at home, and share with his classmates. I can tell his classmates were impressed and I saw their wheels turning in their head. We will see what comes in tomorrow!

  1. I showed my 2nd graders today. They loved it too. Thanks for sharing the link. I love the idea of challenging the kids to make a Rube Goldberg machine.

Thanks for the comment, Scout! Let me know what your creative 2nd graders come up with.

I bookmarked for later this year. Grade 5 students study simple machines and I have them find examples of simple machines in Rube Goldberg devices. Much more fun than "Look at a pulley."

Have you seen the version of this song with the Notre Dame Marching Band. It’s awesome. Interestingly enough, I just showed it to my students last Friday. I hadn’t seen the Rube Goldberg version.
